We all want justice. Every one of us, if we're honest, believes that some things are simply, objectively wrong; not "wrong for me," not "wrong according to my culture," but wrong. Really wrong. We want a world where the powerful can't just rewrite the rules to protect themselves. We want to believe that when the innocent suffer, someone, somewhere, is keeping score.
But here's the question that should keep you up at night: says who? Who gets to decide what's actually true? What's actually right? What's actually good? Because here's the uncomfortable reality, throughout history, the people who've had the microphone, the throne, the army, the wealth; they've always claimed the authority to answer that question. And more often than not, their answer conveniently benefited... them. So we've grown suspicious. Rightly so. We've watched religion get weaponized. We've watched governments abuse their power. We've watched institutions protect themselves at the expense of the vulnerable. And somewhere along the way, a lot of us quietly concluded: maybe there is no "Truth" with a capital T. Maybe it's all just power wearing different masks.
And yet and here's the paradox, even the most committed skeptic among us still says things like "that's not fair" and means it. Still says "that person didn't deserve that" and means it. We can't seem to fully let go of the idea that some things are really true and really right, even while we've lost confidence in anyone's authority to say so. The Ten Commandments seem to have an answer for this.
