On the surface, the Old Testament can feel like a tightly contained narrative; Israel at the center, surrounded by nations on the outside, and God seemingly committed only to His chosen people. It is easy to assume that the story is primarily about boundaries: who is in, who is out, who belongs, and who does not. But Exodus 18 refuses to stay neatly within that framework. A Midianite priest enters the camp of Israel. Not as a conqueror. Not as a threat. But as someone who begins to listen… to observe… and eventually to speak words that sound surprisingly like worship. And the question that hangs over the entire passage is this: What is a man like this doing in the middle of God’s people?

Is this just a family story that happened to involve Moses? Or is something far larger breaking through the boundaries we assumed were fixed? Because if God is doing what this passage seems to suggest, then the categories we often use; insider and outsider, near and far, chosen and excluded may not mean what we think they mean. And perhaps the most pressing question of all is this: If God is willing to draw a Midianite priest this close, what does that reveal about the direction His story is actually moving?
